Different Types of Piles

Bearing piles:Bearing piles are those which are driven into the ground until a hard stratum is reached. Such piles act as pillars supporting the super-structure and transmitting the load down to the level at which it can be safely borne by the ground. Thus bearing piles, by themselves do not support the load, rather they act as a medium to transmit the load from the foundation to the resisting sub-stratum.

Friction piles: When piles are required to b driven at a site where the soil is weak or soft to a considerable depth, the load carried by a pile is borne by the friction developed between the sides of the pile and the surrounding ground (skin friction). In such cases the pile is named as friction or floating pile. Thus friction piles are driven in the type of soil whose strength does not increase with depth or, where rate of increase in strength with depth is very slow.

Sheet piles: Sheet piles differ from bearing or friction piles in that they are rarely used to furnish vertical support but are used to function as retaining wall. Sheet piles are used for retaining soil that is liable to escape laterally when subjected to pressure or to enclose the area required for some foundation and protect it from the action of running water or leakage.

Anchor piles: When piles are used to provide anchorage against horizontal pull from sheet piling walls or other pulling forces, they are termed as anchor piles.

Batter piles: When piles are driven at inclination to resist large horizontal or inclined forces,, the piles are termed as batter piles.

Fender piles: When the piles are used to protect concrete deck or other water front structures from the abrasion or impact that may be caused from the ships or barges (when they are tied up at the deck) they are called fender piles. The fender piles are ordinarily made up of timber.

Compaction piles: When piles are driven in granular soil with the aim of increasing the bearing capacity of the soil, the piles are termed as compaction piles.

Pile Foundation / Deep foundations  in India

Pile Foundation / Deep foundations are required to carry loads from a structure through weak compressible soils or fills on to stronger and less compressible soils or rocks at depth, or for functional reasons. Thermal Integrity Profiling recognized by American Society of Civil Engineers & Deep Foundations Institute

The American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE, announced on July 24 the Thermal Integrity Profiler (TIP) as the 2015 winner of the Charles Pankow Award for Innovation.  This Award celebrates collaboration in innovative design, materials, or construction-related research and development transferred into practice in a sustainable manner.  The Award also rewards innovative approaches that help achieve at least one of the National Construction Technology Goals.   The Award will be presented in March of 2015.

The innovative TIP, which uses the heat generated during cement curing to assess the shape and integrity of concrete foundations, was recognized by ASCE in part due to the collaborative efforts that were key to its development.

“The thermal integrity profiling technology was developed initially at the University of South Florida (USF) where it evolved throughout three Florida Department of Transportation funded research project”, said Gray Mullins, PhD, PE, the USF Professor who led the research team.

A fourth study was performed in cooperation with Washington State Department of Transportation. A joint effort was then undertaken by Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering, LLC (FGE), using the USF-licensed technology, and Pile Dynamics, Inc. (PDI).  The 2 firms transformed the thermal integrity profiling technology into the Thermal Integrity Profiler.

Pile Foundations Company: experimental investigations, analysis and pile design

Piles have been used by mankind for foundation purposes since prehistoric times. Their behavior, however, is far from completely clear and a substantial volume of research is being carried out on the subject.

Pile Foundation field is continually evolving, with development in technologies, methods of analysis and in design approaches. In fact, the design of piles is a complex matter which, although based on the theoretical concepts of soil mechanics, relies heavily on empiricism. This is an inevitable consequence of the marked variability of behavior of piles, which is partly due to random factors but more significantly to the effects of installation techniques.

 Single pile

Experimental evidence and investigations are covered first, with discussions of the effect of installation techniques on bearing capacity and load settlement response. Monitoring of the installation parameters for CFA piles allows a deeper insight into the influence of installation on pile behavior and suggests the possibility of moving from monitoring to controlling installation.

Experimental evidence Pile groups and piled rafts:

It is claimed that the most valuable experimental evidence for pile group and piled raft design comes from observation of the behavior of full scale structures. Evidence collected refers to the settlement and time settlement behavior of piled foundations, to load sharing between the piles and the raft, to load distribution among the piles; it is interpreted in terms of simple geometric parameters and may form the basis of simple empirical predictions On the contrary, for obvious practical reasons, the ultimate bearing capacity of piled foundations has been studied experimentally on small scale models at 1g or in centrifuges, starting from the pioneering work of Cooke (1986). The same applies to the behavior of pile groups under horizontal loads, both at working load and at failure.

Pile groups and piled rafts analysis

Einstein warns that ‘things should be as simple as possible, but not simpler’. Increasingly complex models for the analysis of the behavior of piled foundations are being developed, and the use of 3D finite element analyses is becoming more common.

Attention should be given not only to the second part of Einstein’s warning, but also to the first.

In fact, available methods for analysis of soil-structure interaction for piled foundations are probably perfectly adequate for engineering purposes, provided they are properly employed, paying due attention to the determination of soil properties and the implementation of the analysis.

 Pile Foundation Design

The design of a piled foundation should be aimed (more or less consciously) to satisfying some optimization criterion that is to achieve maximum economy while maintaining satisfactory behavior.

Behavior is assessed by comparing the predicted values of some quantity (e.g. the absolute or differential settlement, the bending moments and shears, the factor of safety against a bearing capacity failure) with threshold values (admissible values), generally given by codes or regulations.

Current design practice is based on the assumption that a piled foundation behaves as a pile group with the cap clear of the ground; the design requisite is to ensure that a proper factor of safety is achieved against failure.

Pile Integrity Test – PIT performs Low Strain integrity testing, also called Sonic Echo or Pulse Echo Testing. Pile Integrity Test – PIT may be used for auger cast-in-place (CFA) piles, drilled shafts, driven concrete piles, concrete filled pipes and timber piles. It detects potentially dangerous defects such as major cracks, necking, soil inclusions or voids and, in some situations, can determine unknown lengths of piles that support existing bridges or towers.

Pile Integrity Test – PIT test consists of attaching an accelerometer to the top or side of the foundation to be tested. The accelerometer acquires data resulting from the impact of a small hand held hammer (instrumented or not). If a defect is present along the shaft, its size and location can be estimated by analyzing the propagation and reflection of the wave induced on the foundation by the ammer impact. It is also possible to estimate the depth of the pile toe.

The Pile Integrity TesterPIT gives peace of mind that a pile or shaft is free of major cracks and voids, prior to construction of the superstructure. A pile integrity test is also known as low strain dynamic test, sonic echo test, and low strain integrity test. This integrity test is one of the methods for assessing the condition of piles or shafts. It is cost effective and not very time consuming.

Dynamic Pile Testing (DPT)

Dynamic load testingDPT is a cost effective alternative to conventional static load testing for a wide variety of pile types and sites. Instead of costly proof-loading with kentledge or anchor piles, the technique uses a heavy falling weight such as a piling hammer to impart a short duration impact to the pile head, whilst monitoring the pile response using temporarily attached transducers. The pile response to dynamic loading may be used to provide the foundation designer with an interpreted pile capacity, and can usually provide additional information that is difficult to obtain via static load testing.

About Pile Foundations?

Pile is the type of foundation in which thin columns’ are constructed to bear the load of super structure uniformly. It is preferred in construction in which it is very difficult to transfer the load of walls to the strata; pile is one of the best foundations. Basically it carries the load from the structure and distributed uniformly to the ground. Especially in seashore side it resists the uneven settlement in structure.

Pile foundation is a type of deep foundation which is preferred in case of encounter of upper soil strata of lower bearing capacity. They are used in case soft/Salty/clayey type of soils.

Piles are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials that enable a particular type of pile foundation to be viable both economically and structurally.

Pile are the part of a structure used to carry and transfer the load of the structure to the bearing ground located at some depth below ground surface. The main components of the foundation are the pile cap and the piles. Piles are long and slender members which transfer the load to deeper soil or rock of high bearing capacity avoiding shallow soil of low bearing capacity the main types of materials used for piles are Wood, steel and concrete. Piles made from these materials are driven, drilled or jacked into the ground and connected to pile caps. Depending upon type of soil, pile material and load transmitting characteristic piles are classified accordingly.

As in such case of soils going for normal foundations may not be possible either from economical point of view or may not be possible at all in case u want to construct near seashore etc., these are the foundations which transfer load to greater depths, where there is strong strata / load reaching that point is minimal.
